Karin Hopkins

Karin Hopkins is a brand strategist at Compassion Society Benefits. She brings both creative and analytical capacity to the position as well as an ability to develop compelling content across the media landscape.

She led public relations and community engagement efforts when Macon County (Alabama) was chosen in 2016 by global defense contractor, Leonardo DRS as the home base for a potential $16 billion U.S. Air Force contract. Karin positioned the project favorably with the general public as well as targeted niche audiences. She developed and managed a multi-media campaign, generating massive television and newspaper coverage. She created digital marketing tools, video productions, print collateral materials and produced special events. Karin was the chief storyteller for this project, using her skills to juxtapose the power of history to the promise of the future.

Storytelling comes natural to Karin. She began her career as a television news reporter/producer and was fast-tracked to news anchor.  After 20 years, she retired from broadcast journalism and transitioned to public relations and business development.

The Essence Music Festival is among her success stories. The public relations strategies she conceived or directed were instrumental in attracting 142,000 patrons to the first Essence Music Festival in 1995.  Festival patrons pumped $75 million into the New Orleans economy transforming the normally sluggish summer season into a tourism bonanza.  In charge of public relations for seven years, Karin was a key factor in the long-term sustainability of the event.  She led public relations campaigns, which contributed to significant increases in attendance and economic impact from 1995 through 2001. The cumulative numbers over those years were two million Essence Music Festival attendees and $800 million in spending.

Karin recruited top talent, built self-sustaining teams, developed operational policies and procedures, improved efficiencies and produced award-winning results for her company and its clients.

The quality of her company’s work and a reputation for integrity resulted in the Port of New Orleans selecting Karin for a supplier diversity consultant contract. The specialty company she co-founded with the late Carol Balthazar, generated $32 million in transactions for New Orleans small businesses.

A veteran communications executive with more than 30 years of experience in key facets of the communications industry, Karin earned a Bachelor of Arts in Mass Communications at Wayne State University and completed all coursework required for a Masters of Art degree in Teacher Education.

Karin loves to decorate her spaces with colors, shapes and textures. She calls her hobby “interior fluffing."

As an only child, she is responsible for her elderly, sick and widowed mother.  This experience provides Karin's CSB colleagues with a firsthand perspective on caregiving.
